Kapha
Kapha is a mind-body energy that is made up of the elements earth and water. It is characterized by the qualities of moist, cold, heavy, dull, soft, sticky, and static. Kapha dosha maintains the body’s lubrication, moistens the joints, develops and strengthens the tissues, and gives strength and stamina to the body.
People who are primarily kapha dosha are calm, affectionate, loyal, good listeners, compassionate, have a slower metabolism, and may often be stubborn and lazy.
They tend to have larger facial features, smooth and oily skin, thick hair, and a stocky body frame. They are generally heavy sleepers and because of the water element present in them they often have clammy hands and feet.
If the kapha dosha is out of balance it can show up as nausea, weight gain, water retention, diabetes, fatigue, and congestion. Emotionally this imbalance can manifest as greed, possessiveness, complacency, lethargy, and depression.
Ayurveda healing focuses on like increases like, so the qualities used to balance kapha are the opposite of the kapha traits.
Kapha predominant individuals should try to incorporate light and dry foods with heating spices, dry-brushing the body to increase circulation and decrease excess congestion and heaviness, add more spontaneity to their routine, maintain regular exercise, and add more greens to the diet. Drinking warm water throughout the day also helps digestion and boost sluggish metabolism.
